How We Calculate Your Chart
Your birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. AstroStorie builds that snapshot from real astronomical data, not from a lookup table or a rough estimate. This page explains, in plain language, where our numbers come from, how we check them for accuracy, and what happens to the birth details you enter. Where the Numbers Come From
Every planet, sign, and house position on your chart starts with one question: where was each celestial body in the sky at your birth moment? To answer it, AstroStorie uses the astronomy-engine library (version 2.1.19), an open source astronomical calculation engine. The engine is built on well established models of planetary motion, the same VSOP and NOVAS families that professional astronomy software relies on to locate the planets and the Moon.
In practice, this means your chart is not guessed. The Sun, Moon, and planet positions are computed from physics based orbital models for your specific date, time, and location. The zodiac signs and houses are then derived from those positions.
How Accurate Is an Online Birth Chart?
A well built online birth chart calculator can place the planets to within about one arc-minute of their true position. One arc-minute is one sixtieth of a degree, far finer than astrology ever needs. At that level, the accuracy of your chart depends far more on the birth time and place you enter than on the software. AstroStorie's positions are computed with the astronomy-engine library and checked against NASA's JPL Horizons, the reference ephemeris (planetary position database) published by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Let us unpack that. An ephemeris is simply a table of where celestial bodies are at given times. JPL Horizons, maintained by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is one of the most authoritative ephemeris systems in the world and is widely used as a gold standard for testing astronomical calculations. When the astronomy-engine's output is compared against Horizons, the positions agree to roughly one arc-minute.
We want to be honest about what that number means. One arc-minute is already far more precise than astrology requires, because a single zodiac sign spans 30 whole degrees, which is 1,800 arc-minutes. A difference of one arc-minute will never move a planet into a different sign, and only matters at the exact edge of a house cusp in rare cases. So the engine is not the weak link in an accurate chart.
Why Your Birth Time Matters More Than the Software
The real source of error in most online charts is not the calculation. It is the input. Two details do the heavy lifting.
Birth time comes first. The Ascendant, your rising sign, and the house positions move roughly one degree every four minutes. A birth time that is off by even fifteen or twenty minutes can shift your rising sign or nudge a planet into a neighbouring house. If you only know an approximate time, your Sun, Moon, and planet signs will still be correct, but treat the rising sign and houses as best estimates.
Birth place comes next. The city sets the latitude, longitude, and time zone used to convert your local birth time to universal time. An accurate location keeps the whole chart aligned. This is why we ask for a precise time and place, and why a chart built from a guessed time should be read with a little caution.
Which Zodiac and House System Do We Use?
AstroStorie calculates charts using the tropical zodiac, the system used across most of Western astrology, where the signs are tied to the seasons rather than to the current constellations.
Houses are divided using the Placidus system, the most widely used house system in modern Western practice. Like most Placidus calculators, ours falls back to equal houses at extreme latitudes near the poles, where the Placidus method breaks down mathematically. For the vast majority of birthplaces this never comes into play, and you get standard Placidus houses.
